It happened again

June 17, 2008

Today I got to come face to face with human cruelty toward animals again.  On my way to work I saw him.  A young dog wandering around the church yard and every car that went by he ran to and looked longingly to see if it was his owner coming back to get him.  Abandoned animals have a certain look.  You can always tell, but just to be sure, I asked the neighbors if they were missing a dog and of course no one was.

So when I got home from work I went out and took him a bowl of feed.  He ate like there was no tomorrow.  I would guess that he was about 6 months old.  Past the cute new puppy stage, probably into the chewing everything stage, and the newness wore off stage.  I was standing there when a state road crew stopped at the church to load some equipment.

One of the guys on the crew came over and was asking me about him.  He said he has seen him the last couple of days and was wondering if he had a home.  I told him that I had asked all of the neighbors and no one claimed him and that I was going to take him to the pound so at least he would not starve to death.  This nice guy asked if he could take him and of course I was relieved that he did.  He left me his name in case it belonged around here and just happened to get lost.

I sometimes get so frustrated with people.  I will never understand taking a living, breathing, pet and just throwing it away like it was yesterday’s trash.  And don’t get me started on man’s cruelty to man.  I just have seen to much of it lately, both here in the cyber world and in the real world.  And it leaves me wondering why.

Why is it so easy to tear down instead of build up?  Why is it so easy to let hatred and fear rule our actions?  Why is it so easy to disregard those, both animal and human, left in our care?   Today, on the trip home from work, I heard a news report about a case of child abuse.  It made my heart break.  I am getting so tired of humans that can’t, no won’t, move from a place of compassion and love.

I so hear your fustration, irritation and sadness. I think you answered your own questions…..because it’s “easy”. Loving is not an easy task for many people.

I’m very glad God made people like you who will take the time to stop, be concerned, care and love all things. You are loving the unwanted and I commend you for that Kelli.

HILL–Humans are evil. You can learn a lot from a dog. When I was in college my roommate and myself went to the gas station and there was a puppy sounds about the same age as yours sitting out side.

The gas station people said the dog had been out there for a couple of days just sitting. Waiting. So my roommate and I took the dog home she had always wanted a dog.

We went outside to check on the dog and it was gone. We stood there for a moment looking around the yard. And asking the neighbors if they had seen it. Then I told my room mate that I bet the dog went back up to the gas station.

We hopped in the car and drove the two miles to the gas station. And there the dog was, sitting waiting for its owner to come back.

Talk about dedication to an owner. We took the dog back home and kept him inside for a couple days and on a leash outside.

People are friggen-z evil. I may have seen the same report on the news. About the toddler? Humans can be a hot mess.

You also witnessed unexpected compassion towards animals, so I will take that away from this post. Some people are absolutely horrible, but there are other people who are good.

And, every once in a while, the good outshines the bad. I wait patiently for those days.

I’m so, so glad you took care of the puppy and it found a new human to love.

Steph, I can’t stand by and watch suffering of innocent living beings, doesn’t matter if it be human or animal. I just get so frustrated at the throw away mentallity of people. Don’t want an animal? Throw it out. Get frustrated at the kids? Then tie them up or beat them senseless. Needless to say I have a real problem with both of those things.

Lesbainsaidwhat, When I was growing up my mom had a plaque that said, “The more I see of some people, the better I like my dog.” When I was in high school I would have run away if not for the fact I had a cat called Qunicefer Allen, Quincy for short. He would dance with me…sorry got off on a tangent there. But all that to say that I understand liking animals better than some people. Of course now there are a lot of people I like very much, but my animals will always have a special place in my heart.

Lindsey, Thank you for reminding me that good came from today. Forgive me, but at the time I wrote this post I was in the middle of a “the world is going to hell in a handbasket” moment. You are right, there are many good and wonderful people in this world. There are many that strive to help their neighbor and to love the unwanted. Most of the time I believe that the good outweighs the bad. It is just hard to find the good when the bad is all that is reported in the news. I was also feeling a little bruised by all I have heard and read recently. But tomorrow is a new day and I will look to find the good. Thanks for the pep talk.

I completely understand and totally agree.

As I said…..”You are loving the unwanted and I commend you for that Kelli.”

How cruel can some people really be I call them barbaric? On the N1 South going towards Johannesburg I noticed 4 dead animals in and on the side of the road. I try to stop to pull them out of the road and no one would give me a chance, no they just ride over the animals, without knowing if they are dead or not.
On my way home from Johannesburg I was driving on the right hand side when my eye caught a brown bundle lying next to the concrete wall. I pulled over, called Metro Police so that they could keep the traffic away,(still waiting for them), had police vehicles go by and show me the finger and people swearing at me for stopping right next to the concrete wall.
I just had enough got out of my car and went to this doggie, He was so afraid and was trembling so much. I picked him up and put him on the back seat, the wheels hardly turned when he just feel asleep, so exhausted. I took him to the Centurion SPCA and they told me the new trend is if people do not want their cat or dog, they throw them on the side of the highways.
People like that are barbaric not to speak of those swearing and giving me the middle finger because I save animals. How cruel has the world not become!

    Cheryl,

I once was behind a car that threw a cat out while driving 55 mph on interstate. The poor thing didn’t have a chance. So yes I know that there are some cruel hateful people out there. But YOU stopped. You cared and saved that dog’s life. So you are proof that there are good loving people in the world too. Thank you for taking care of the little guy and thanks for your comment.

Hi wvhillcountry, that is so sad, how can that be called a human being? I am so sorry you had to witness that, it must haunt one. Hope you got the guy and slapped him stupid!I look at my dogs and cats and when I see those little eyes looking at me I think how can one be so cruel. I read about the tiger
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080621/wl_sthasia_afp/bangladeshenvironmenttig and how he was beaten to death. Then I say I so wish he killed more of them. Here in South Africa we are trying very hard to stop the horse slaughtering going, here is the link: http://obphorses.wordpress.com/.
In this world of today our animals are facing barbarians and it was not suppose to be like that. I have sent emails across the globe pleading for people to stop abusing our animals. If you would like to be updated on what is going on in SA regarding our animals please email me at Cheryl@s2rprojects.co.za. Let all of us around the world stand together and bring this cruelty to an end.
